India to have 492million mobile users by end of the year

A cellular industry body Wednesday said it expects India to have some 492 million mobile phone users by the year-end, compared with 392 million at the end of March. The Cellular Operators Association of India – which represents more than a dozen telecommunications companies offering GSM services – expects the industry’s mobile subscriber base to reach close to 900 million by 2012. GSM is short for global system for mobile communications technology, and three of four of India’s 391.76 million users are on this platform.

“Even with the subscriber base of 900 million, the teledensity would be just 72.4%,” COAI said.

Bharti Airtel Ltd., India’s largest telecommunication service provider by number of subscribers, had some 96.73 million users at the end of April.

T Mobile Sidekick LX 2009 Review

T Mobile Sidekick LX 2009 Review

The T-Mobile Sidekick LX 2009 gets reviewed by Engadget Mobile. The LX is the next high-class Sidekick phone and the first to offer 3G and GPS. It has the standard for the brand form-factor, but its screen is 3.2-inches large and with very high resolution. A phone for social people, it comes with apps for MySpace, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, as well as the typical for Sidekick good email and big QWERTY. You can find the review here Take also a look at the hands-on video i published a few days ago

Historically, it’s always seemed like the Sidekick range is one or two major features short of being a serious contender outside of the typical Sidekick clique, and for the first time, the LX 2009 seriously bucks that trend in a big way. GPS and 3G are critical additions that seem to work pretty well here, and we’re stoked to see what sorts of apps end up filtering into the download catalog. Add to that the promise of Exchange integration coming soon, and we’re pretty confident that the recovering skater punks out there working million-dollar deals in Armani suits (read: us, except for the Armani and million-dollar deal parts) could get away with pocketing one of these day and night. Over the course of the last couple generations, the Sidekick’s gone from a quirky phone to a great phone — and the metamorphosis may finally be complete.

Verizon to offer free Wi Fi to broadband customers?

Verizon Communications Inc. is preparing to offer free Wi-Fi access at hotspots to subscribers to its home broadband services, according to people familiar with the matter. The phone giant will partner with Boingo, a startup that counts former EarthLink Inc. founder Sky Dayton as chairman, to deliver the access.

Discussions are fluid, and Verizon is uncertain about particulars like whether users would have free access only in their regions or nationwide. The service may launch as soon as the summer, according to a person familiar with the situation.
