iPad VS Kindle Fire: Like Comparing Apples and Oranges
Posted by: Banksy in Android, iPad, Tablets
While I understand the excitement felt by Android fan boys and Apple haters alike by the news that the Kindle Fire is currently outselling the iPad2 at Best Buy, lets not get ahead of ourselves just yet. While some are saying, “This is the death of Apple and their Big Brother ways!” (or at least I imagine people are saying that), I would vehemently disagree.
In my four years of business school I have learned one important lesson (yes, only one): If two products don’t accomplish the same tasks, appeal to the same target market, and provide the same utility, then they can’t be considered substitutes for one another. Let me break it down for a second, other than the $199 price tag, reviewers of the product have sited the lack of camera, Bluetooth, GPS, mic, calendar, or even a basic note pad as the products primary flaws.
Now I’m no supply chain expert, but I can tell you with certainty that those features cost money to develop and produce, and provide additional benefit to tablet users warranting a higher price point for the iPad2. I have provided a link to an infographic below that shows a basic demographic comparison between the Kindle Fire and iPad2′s respective target markets. It seems that the Kindle’s saving grace is America’s high divorce rate. To conclude, I would say that calling the Kindle Fire an “iPad killer” would be equivalent to claiming that McDonalds was going to put steakhouses out of business – it just isn’t going to happen. But that’s just me, what do you think?
