Nokia transfers Symbian support to Accenture

After announcing shutting down of a manufacturing plant and culling 3,500 employees, Nokia today announced it has completed the transaction with Accenture it had announced on June 22 this year.
As a result, about 2,300 Nokia employees working on Symbian will be transferred to Accenture and hence, outsource the entire Symbian development process. In February this year, Nokia had announced a deal with Microsoft to use the latter’s Windows Phone OS as its primary platform, dumping Symbian and MeeGo. However, even as Nokia outsources Symbian, it has emerged that the handset vendor is busy developing another platform, codenamed Meltemi, which is likely to replace Symbian (S40 in particular) to address the low-end smartphone market. Meltemi is expected to provide better features running on low-end hardware as Symbian S40 could not be scaled up any further.
Hopefully, things will work out for the better this time around for Nokia and Meltemi does not become another MeeGo, an open source operating system it had created by combining its Maemo and Intel’s Moblin, only to dump it in favor of Windows Phone.
