Apple overtakes Nokia as largest handset vendor by revenue

Apple Inc. has overtaken Nokia Corp. as the world’s largest vendor of mobile handsets by revenue, research firm Strategy Analytics said Thursday after both companies released earnings.

“We estimate Apple’s wholesale revenues for its iPhone handset division stood at $11.9 billion in the first quarter of 2011,” Alex Spektor, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics said.”Apple overtook Nokia for the first time, which recorded a lower $9.4 billion of wholesale handset revenues.”

Nokia and Microsoft sign definitive agreement

Nokia and Microsoft today announced the signing of a definitive agreement on a partnership that will result in a new global mobile ecosystem, utilizing the very complementary assets of both companies. Completed ahead of schedule, the definitive agreement is consistent with the joint announcement made on February 11.

In addition to agreeing to the terms of their partnership, including joint contributions to the development of the new ecosystem, Nokia and Microsoft also announced significant progress on the development of the first Nokia products incorporating Windows Phone. With hundreds of personnel already engaged on joint engineering efforts, the companies are collaborating on a portfolio of new Nokia devices. Nokia has also started porting key applications and services to operate on Windows Phone and joint outreach has begun to third party application developers.

Nokia Q1 2011: Profits down 10%   Sold 108.5 million phones

Nokia warned on Thursday operating profit margins at its key phone unit would slip in coming quarters after reporting better than expected January-March earnings. January-March underlying earnings per share fell to 0.13 euro from 0.14 euro a year earlier, beating analysts’ average forecast for 0.10 euro. Nokia’s market share fell to 29 percent from 33 percent a year earlier as nimbler Asian rivals ate into its dominant position in cheaper phones and it continued to lose out in more expensive smartphones to Apple and others. To turn around its smartphone fortunes, Nokia’s new Chief Executive Stephen Elop in February unveiled a deal to start using Microsoft software instead of its own Symbian platform.
