Nokia takes on Symbian development as Foundation scales backPosted by: Phat^Trance in Nokia, Press releasesNokia and the Symbian Foundation on Monday announced a major restructuring that will see the handset giant take over the development of the Symbian operating system while the latter scales down its activities to focus solely on licensing its software and intellectual property. The first phase of the transition will see the Symbian Foundation downsize its operations and its staff numbers, and by April 2011 it will be governed by a small group of executive directors. Meanwhile Nokia will invest its own resources in developing and distributing the Symbian OS.

These operators include America Movil, Orange, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, TeliaSonera, T-Mobile and Vodafone. And recently, the solution has undergone large-scale deployment at leading enterprises such as JCDecaux and OnMobile, which have been attracted to its dramatically improved efficiency and significantly lower cost compared to rival solutions.

The Streak is available on AT&T i the US and it’s both a 5″ tablet and a cell phone with 3G. The Streak runs a customized version of Android 1.6 and 2.2 Froyo should be available later this year. It has a capacitive multi-touch display with Gorilla Glass, a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, GPS, compass, WiFi and a microSD card slot. Build quality and looks are top notch, and the Streak is worth a look if you need a pocket computer first and a voice phone second.
