Android Q2 smartphone sales up with 50%

The smartphone market grew 50% in Q2 driven by manufacturers of Android handsets, according to global figures from analyst IDC. Smartphone manufacturers shipped 63 million handsets in the second quarter of 2010, compared with 42 million units a year earlier. Shipments in the first half of the year were up by 54% to 118.3 million units.
Meanwhile, HTC was the top supplier of Android devicesin Q2, on a unit shipment basis. The manufacturer more than doubled its shipment volumes to 4.8 million units, from a year ago.
Nokia remained the top smartphone vendor worldwide in Q2, with 38% market share and 24 million units shipped, up 42%. However, Nokia’s progress year over year did not keep up with the overall growth of the smartphone market.
Apple maintained its global number three smartphone position with 13.3% share, and record shipments of 8.4 million units, up 61.5%.
IDC has predicted that the worldwide smartphone market will continue this growth in the second half.
