Review: Sprint Overdrive 3G / 4G mobile hotspot
Posted by: Phat^Trance in Operator News, Reviews, Video
Overdrive allows you to connect up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices simultaneously–including laptops, gaming devices, cameras and even smartphones from other carriers–through a single connection (via Wi-Fi), to a network that is up to 10 times faster than today’s 3G speeds from any national wireless carrier. Check out the video review after the break…

I’m sure this will be taken out in few hours or even minutes, but I’ll try anway. This device completely a RIP-OFF. They advertise as unlimited, as soon as you walk inside any building even in 4G areas – it comes back by itself to 3G )automatic) – and then you are on the clock. 5MB limit per month – after 20 days of service – I’m $80 OVER THE LIMIT!!! And just like I said – I live in 100% 4G area when you look at coverage map (Chicago IL). I turn a device ON – No problems – shows “Connected to 4G. Few moments later you are looking at the device – it’s on 3G. Battery has overheating problems all the time unless it’s not plugged into charging mode. I came bact to the store complaining – they gave me new battery. I tried – no changes. Still overheating. It gets so hot – your kids can get fingers burned if they touch that unit!!! They advertise battery life “Up to 6 hours” – the most time I used it was 1 hour 30 minutes!!! And it is dead. Software freezes a lot. You are in the middle of poker game or buying something on Ebay – unit freezes and you are out of luck at this point – you lost a game or you missed your auction, because even if you’ll try to reboot device – it takes usually about 2 -3 minutes to go back online. I call CS to complaint and try to avoid these charges – they don’t care – they said it is LEGAL CHARGES, please read your contract. So basically every time you are searching online – you HAVE TO WATCH YOUR device and make sure it is still shows “4G” on the display, because you never know when it switches back to 3G. I returned it after 20 days, my total charges for 20 days appeared to be over $150!!! That is the most expensive internet service I had within last 10 years! BEWARE!!! Please do some more searching on the web about this unit before you buy one!!!
Whoa. Thanks Tony. I was thinking of buying one of these. I’ll wait at least until unlimited 3G is included in the plan. That’s pretty fraudulent to advertise the service as unlimited and then stick you with usage fees.
I have been testing the Overdrive for work in the Chicago area. The 4G speed is very fast, like being at home on my cable Net connection. When 4G is connected at 60% or more signal strength I can consistently get 5-6Mbps down and around 1-1.5Mbps up. The major caveat to the Overdrive device is that it performs best when you are stationary. I take the Metra train, Milwaukee West line, and trying to get anything done work-related (i.e. over VPN) is near impossible. Sprint’s coverage map shows lots of blue (4G) all over the Chicago area and out to the west burbs even. This is very misleading because while riding the Metra I am constantly dropping or switching from 4G to 3G and back. Every time you switch networks your connections bounce, which means your VPN will drop. I am sure I don’t have to elaborate on how exceedingly frustrating that is.
So for commuters, do not waste your time on this device thinking that it will allow you to get some work done on the train because it will not. You will spend more time looking at the Overdrive to see why your connection dropped than actually working.
Sprint really needs to continue working on expanding the 4G network before this is a viable device for commuters. When I really need to get something done I resort to forcing the Overdrive into 3G-only mode so that I don’t have to deal with the constant connection bouncing. Even then the signal strength is all over the place, 100% to 40% to 80% to 20% to 60% back to 100% and on and on it goes. It seems like Sprints ability to switch from tower to tower is horribly slow.
On a Verizon 3G USB aircard I can ride the train without worrying about bouncing my connection and the signal is very steady in strength.
To avoid dropping back into 3G and additional charges, in the Overdrive’s Advanced Settings, choose the “WAN” tab and change the Connection Preferences to “4G Only”
