Hands on with Windows Phone 7 Series

Heres another hands-on video with the Windows Phone 7 Series. Looks promising.  (video by IntoMobile)

Microsoft just launched their new Windows Phone 7 Series at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It’s a completely re-imagined mobile operating system from Microsoft. Windows Mobile is no longer, it will be replaced by the Windows Phone brand. The UI is based on “hubs” that use multiple panes for different features.

  1. It looks quite impressive so far, I like the stylised panels and the hubs, it almost looks like the MS boys were really thinking this time. I will be keeping a close eye on the latest Windows phones, it could even sway me from my current.

However and here is my concerns:

    (1) I have not seen in any media, photo or video the OS running in landscape mode, perhaps DM have you ?

    (2) The people guy providing the demo and again in media are very careful not to go too deep into the OS, the little arrow button that he did not want to show us providing an explanation that things were not finished in there. Perhaps this is the case but also it could be that behind this its bog standard Winmo again.

On the whole though things are looking very promising, so long as they dont try and trick people especially the media as they will tear MS a new one if they do.

  2. I’m still trying to figure out the reason(s) for this ‘OS’ attracting so much hype.

It seems like modern phones are being designed for the mentally challenged. Anything beyond 1st grade simplicity is deemed ‘unintuitive’, ‘clunky’ etc.. It’s pathetic.

  3. @Nick: Sooo true! Although I have to say that I love a good solid straightforward experience, but imo the phone must also give me the possibility to do stuff that goes way beyond what a normal user does like what I get on my N900.

  4. @Colm: You do realise this isnt ready till October.

@nick: i agree, in part. You must realise though that it takes a fine OS that is simplistic UI and yet carries all the funtionality of a complicated one.

  5. @Dave

I do know this is not finished but its worrying that there is no coverage at all beyond the main home panels, there is no file management shown or anything behind these panels.

Dont get me wrong, I hope its just as case of unfinished software but given past WinMo OS iterations where they have tried to provide a nice face deep down it was terrible.

Given also that this was a major announcement/launch they should have the OS alot more developed, between now and October is not a long time and an OS with only this much time left to develop should be in bug testing. Pretty much everything should be done at this point so thats why im a little skeptical that behind the scenes is something new.

But I hope it turns out well as I really like the new look and UI
