  1. Hey Nokia ……”All i wanna say is that . they dont realy care about us”.
dissapointment and nothing else for a hardcore nokia:(

  2. disappointed says:

WTF? It should be in some firmware update for older phones. Such a thing in “new” Symbian? Well it looks still shitty. Maybe next couple years nokia will be equal to present mobile os like android or windows. But with this kind and speed of “innovations” they wiil never be the leader.

  3. where the hell u guys read ‘nokia’? Symbian is not the same as nokia though . Symbian is also for more brands…

  4. Hey T,

Symbian emailed us a couple more screenshots, with the corrected application switcher. It’s at the end of this post (I didn’t want to make another one about screenshots :p)

  5. By the look if it, i think symbian^4 can easily be given as an update to current s60v5 mobile phones.

  6. omg, whats so wrong with Symbian? This looks like a skin for s60 v5? Why are they doing this when the good examples are already here ? Take a look at htc sense, than at android and… Than at this here? *bleep* ! And just imagine what will happen when nokia add even more crappy look to this while “upgrading” it:)))) Epoc is dead. Why should Its’ freak son Symbian live?:)))

  7. Me too. I totally disagree that this is the User Interface they’ll be launching with Symbian^4.

Maybe they want many users to react on it and give some suggestions and comments. What a marketing..

But still, crossed-fingers that Nokia will give us a highly anticipated UI experience, and OS as well in its upcoming Symbian versions.

  8. Nokia really got stuck somewhere with software design. This looks immature and for some low end phones. Even windows mobile looks better than this. :)
    Hope they will improve symbian^4.

That’s interesting, because all of the current modern mobile platforms actually do look wery much like that. Those screenshots have similarities with Maemo and others. So you are actually saying that all current mobile platforms do look like shitty? tell me in what way eg. Andoid you mentioned is so different? Actually it does not look so different and neither do other platforms.

What you guys should understand is that these are not screenshots of the final Symbian ^4. There is no really photos of final Symbian ^4 yet. These are concept screens.

  10. @ tshrjain

“i think symbian^4 can easily be given as an update to current s60v5 mobile phones.”

That’s not going to happen. Symbian ^4 is huge leap forward when compared to current Symbian phiones with S60 5th edition, it’s not just some small update. You will not get it for the current phones as a update that’s 100% sure.

And by the way, there is no S60 anymore. S60 5th eition is the last version there will ever be.

  11. In my opinion those screens do look good. those screens do have similarities with eg. Maemo.

Any icons, colors and gradients, wallpapers etc are not important, those are related to themes and can be changed by user.

What those screenshots show is eg:
    - back button and menu button were moved from the bottom of the screen to the top of the screen. it looks wery much like eg. Maemo and other platforms.
    - At the bottom of the screen you can have application specific tool-buttons.
    - You can have several Hioe screens
    - yuo can have widgets on home screen. those screenshots don’ät tell anything about what widget are on home screen and in what position. Those screens just show that you can have widgets on home screen and widgets don’t have to be square in shape.

In general it does look more clean, more fingger friendly and more modern to me. As was said these are just concept screens so these just some general stuff not how the final product looks. Anyway not bad at all in my opinion.

  12. - You can have several Home screens

  13. Yep, looks like there is atleast three home screen pages, which gives more space for your widgets etc :) Final product might have even more. Screenshots shown in the article here don’t have it, but there is now also application switcher icon at the top of the screen.

  14. I love this actually, font renders AMAZINGLY (because of that I since changed my phone’s font to Verdana to match it.).

I love that UI and wish this is what they did with s60v5, which is a joke as it stands now. They SHOULD release this UI as an update to s60v5. Don’t tell me the hardware isn’t good enough cause this is a simple UI, not special effects or the actual OS itself. If someone made a simple s60v5 theme to resemble this, atleast, I’d be the first to download it.

Remember, Symbian Foundation isn’t trying to copy iPhone OS, WebOS, Android, or the upcoming Windows Phone OS. It’s suppose to be simple, fast, and complete. Those concepts are super-bad-ass.

  15. Plus, keep in mind. Be constructive. Every time Symbian Foundation tries to advance the OS, 80% of the viewers say “ITZ SO SH!TTY AND OLD LOOKING! YAAA ANDROWD IZ SOOO KUL.” Why would the SF improve your user experience when they rarely get good feedback for what they achieve?

“Well it looks still shitty.” How does that look worse than any other OS on the market?

  16. Symbian are just fucked up,they have a good OS,but their UI is just messed…apart from maemo, which also has a stupid browser(not full screen)

  17. Hmm. Actually, these photos look very promising. And, yes, I’m pretty sure Symbian^4 can be flashed to older s60v5 devices, with little bit effort and modding, as Symbian is open source

  18. That´s bad the first images are from Symbian^3. Go to Symbian.org to check.

And the last 2 images that are really from Symbian^4.

  19. I think most people are paying too much attention to backround pics and “flashiness” of these screenshots. Those can be made easily to look very nice and polished which they of cource will do. I think these pics are suppose to give us peak of the functionality and the totally different usability that symbian^4 will provide.

Most of them seems not so groundbreaking but probably have taken a lot of time design and even more make it reality. I’m basically hoping from the symbian^4 for a everything happen more easily with less tapping and waiting and less popup-notification and overall to make everything more simple. To make it look flashy they probably will but it will only be for me a nice plus feature.

  20. @ David,
Maemo’s default browser DOES work in full screen. I’m posting from it right now.

Unless someone provides proper hardware drivers, flashing the new Symbian won’t be that simple. Not yet… And Symbian is an independent organization, and no longer controlle by Nokia. It is controlled by its members, like Samsung, Nokia, Fujitsu, at&t, and many others. If you have any ideas for improvement, just tell them via their UI brainstorm site. Despite what you say, this is what most users and carriers want, and the UI is themeable, so look and all means less than layout and accessibility.

Expecting the UI to be ported to current devices doesn’t take into account that the UI will be hardware accelerated and possibly not suitable for many current Symbian devices.

  21. One word I can say about this S^4, UGLY.
