Nokia skips Symbian v2, Jumps directly to v3

In a bid to speed up development of the symbian platform Nokia is to skip the offering of symbian version 2 to go direct to version 3 with the multi-touch functions, states Michael Hsu, general manager of Nokia Taiwan.  Symbian version 3 will be here for the third quarter of 2010.

Nokia’s QT development framework featured for symbian version 4 will allow developers the ability to develop for both Symbian and Maemo platforms simultaneously.

Nokia will continue with its present categorisation of series s40 products at a shipment rate of 35%, symbian s60 will account for 55% of Nokia’s handset shipments, with Maemo at 10%.

  1. Symbian/S60 phones are not 55% of Nokia shipments. S40 (and S30) ship hundreds of millions while Symbian shipment figures are much lower.

  2. They are Nokia’s figures for shipment in 2011

  3. I want to know, the actual s60v5 phones will be update to the new symbian???

    Sorry for my bad english..

  4. no they will not, as usual with Nokia / symbian is that you will have to buy a new device

  5. i think first they should release Rm-428 v40, because i have waited for it for a loooooong time.

  6. From article:

“Nokia will continue with its present categorisation of symbian s40 ”

There is NO such as Symbian S40. S40 has nothing to do with Symbian. S40 phones DO NOT have Symbian as a operating system. S40 is a platform on top of OS which is officially called as ISA (Intelligent System Architecture). ISA is also unofficially called as Nokia OS.

  7. “no they will not, as usual with Nokia / symbian is that you will have to buy a new device”

As no one expected that Nokia would the version 40 of 5800, I hope it is upgradeable … I can only say I hope that Nokia is wrong and we upgraded ..

  8. Don’t count on it. Nokia hinted to me that the higher the Symbian^# the release, the hardware requirements will potentionally increase, as in, if s60v5 users were to even receive any OS updates, Symbian^2 would be that update. Nokia just trashed Symbian^2 and gave us s60v5 users a rather large middle finger.

    Eff you too Nokia.

  9. is it atleast coming to rm 428? because i would really love that music player on desktop. it came to rm 356 and others…..

  10. So, basically the advice is, don’t buy another Nokia/Symbian S60v5 phone. They’ve just obsoleted their current high end phones running S60. 5800s and N97/N97 minis are officially orphans.

I know that you can port Windows Mobile 6.5 to older handsets; Google updates ALL their older phones to the latest Android version, even the first HTC G1.

    What a joke.

Any potential buyers should wait until Symbian 3 phones are out on the market, get a Nokia N900 or look at other manufacturers.

  11. How stupid of nokia, are they planning on killing their touch screen phone line up? This means that smart or users with knowledge about nokia and are interested in buying a s60v5 wont buy their products.. GREAT MOVE NOKIA!

Btw, even if they ditch symbian^2, their still late with their ^3 and ^4 release.

  12. Ok, what i understand from the the article and the responds here.
Nokia will not upgrade the “new” phones, such as N97, N97mini, N900…

I consider my self (all my friends also calling me that) as Nokia-holic, and it sucks.
I have N97, and it sucks that i wont be able to upgrade the symbian V3.

  13. well, i’m not sure but i’ve heard that they’re testing the new symbian versions (i’m sure it was symbian^2 – not sure if that also refers to 3 and 4 ) on n97s. so if this is true (and i’m kinda sure i understood that right), i think we have a good chance to get an upgrade!

  14. I don’t think it will be upgradeable. They didn’t let the possibility to upgrade from FP1 to FP2 on the same device, how do you think they will let the possibility to jump to a whole new platform on the same hardware resources.

And, I believe, there is also a marketing technique in the middle because, the more devices would be able to upgrade to the new platform, the less sales will they have for the new devices released.

  15. Thanks folks, I just cried tears of laughter while reading the above comments, pure comedy gold. Maybe Nokia will update my 7650 to Symbian^3 lol. :)

  16. Un tres bonne info , j’espere qelle me sera utiles !
