Micro Race-17

Micro Race is a bird’s eye view racing game. It features 8 unique, carefully handcrafted tracks: a knight’s castle, a desert with camels, a tropical village near a volcano, a futuristic expo and other fantastic surroundings. 7 micro machines are at your disposal. Outdrive your computer opponents using many power-ups such as weapons, speed boosters or thunderstrikes.

I’m testing this game on my Nokia 5800XM. The installation file is 4.5MB, and it can be installed on internal memory or on memory card.

After you install and run it, you come to the general menu.

From here you can select Options and set the General settings, Languages and Controls. I recommend to select
Auto-Forward option, as this will greatly help you win the race. The gameplay itself and the menus are in landscape mode.

As you select “Quick Race” option, you get a selection of 7 miniature cars (among others an Alpha, Lamborghini, F1 car, Zonda, etc…):

Once a selection is made, you can select one from 8 tracks: Expo, Town, Snow Land, Country, Factory, Castle, Volcano and Desert.
Here you can also select the game difficulty: Easy, Medium or Hard.

Along the race you will get power-ups and bonuses that help you win the race. The game runs smoothly and reacts nicely to the phone touchscreen.
The car follows the stylus or finger. I recommend using stylus, as this gives you maximum visibility over the screen and accuracy of the game play.
Driving over a bonus allows you to pick it up, and tapping on screen allows you to apply that bonus. Here are various goodies you can use to fight the competition.

The tracks themselves are not too long, so the race duration is short. Some tracks are more tricky (like the Snow Land).
At the end of race, you can see your lap time statistics in the Records.

Conclusion:
The game is fun and worth its price. It is currently available at OVI store for 3 EUR. Link to OVI
However, I should note some points that need to be improved. The game is in 2D and runs from only in one view (birds-eye view). So, there is no possibility to change the camera to a view from the drivers perspective. In addition, the game is played only with an interaction to the screen, and there is no use made of the phone’s accelerometer (like in Global Race – Ranging Thunder).
While there was no lag whatsoever in the game play, jumping out of it and trying to run another application simultaneously was difficult for my phone.   The audio experience could be better. There is sound of the car engine and the drama of crashing.
The choice of the 7 miniature cars is a nice idea, but their driving characteristics is the same (am I asking too much?).
