Texting more dangerous than talking while driving

An American study has found that there is considerably more dangerous texting than talking on the cell phone in traffic. The survey conducted by the University of Utah has analyzed how 40 young people behave in traffic when using a mobile phone.

The study examined 20 women and 20 men from age 19 to 23 years were performing various operations when they sat in a car simulator. All of the people were accustomed to typing SMS and all had had a license in less than five years.

The study concluded that the risk of accidents went up by 9% when the subjects were talking on the mobile phone while driving. When the test persons sent sms the risk of accidents increased by 30%.

The number of traffic accidents related to cell phones has increased dramatically in both the U.S. and Canada in recent years. America’s equivalent of the National Road Administration has now launched an investigation of the technical means to try to tackle the problem of the use of cell phones in traffic.
