The Nokia N900 finally got support for Last.fm thanks to the Vagalume application. Download the application from here
Changelog:
- Implemented the Last.fm Web Services API v2.0
- Support for Libre.fm and other Last.fm-compatible services
- Support for Maemo 5 (Nokia N900)
- New logo and other UI changes
- Sleep timer (i.e. stop playback after X minutes)
- New configuration setting to download free tracks automatically

Last.fm’s TOS prohibit the use of Last.fm on phones.
So he report is incorrect in that you need to manually change the source code of Vagalume, recompile and only then it’s possible to use Last.fm. By default it’s only possible to listen to libre.fm.
You do no need to recompile, It’s enough to add a file describing the Last.fm service. Look at the vagalume FAQ for details and an example service.xml file. In doing that you of course take responsibility for breaking last.fm’s TOS but the distinction between computers and mobile phones is getting awfully blurry…
