Nokia layoff talks at factory in Salo, Finland (Nokia N97 birthplace)
Posted by: dani2xll in Nokia

Nokia is to implement furloughs next year for approximately 2,000 members of staff at its Salo plant in southwest Finland.
“The duration of the furloughs will be determined during talks. Any single furlough won’t last over 90 days,” said spokesman Tapani Kaskinen. The furlough plans means that 20 percent of the staff will be laid off.
Due to manufacturing and current downturn of market demands Nokia has no choice but to reduce its workers. The news follows Nokia’s earlier layoffs this year.
Shop Steward Anne Malm spoke about the news, saying that “Plant employees have been prepared for cutbacks” but that it is unfortunate it comes right at the start of the Christmas holiday period.
The Salo factory produced the first batch of N97. Checkout the N97 coming off the production line at the Salo factory.

Its not real layoff, it is cyclic forced off times – up to but not beyond 90 days.
layoff was a unfortunate choice of words by the finnish news agency
but after all, english is not their mother tongue.
Okie for another 90 days 2000 employees wil be jobless..
karhu is right, and we cannot call it un-paid vacation same time, as we are receiving unemployment compensation for this period of time
Ohh that’s fine then..
