Video: iPhone 3GS Vs. Blackberry Storm 2

In this round the folks at technobuffalo compares the screens, scrolling, browser, cut, copy, and paste, and keyboards on the iPhone 3GS and the Blackberry Storm 2.

Just wanted to note that the Blackberry Storm2 (and first generation Storm) has multi-touch capabilities, but RIM however did not implement some (most) of the multi-touch gestures that were implemented in the iPhone (and most other multi-touch devices) like the “pinch” zoom.
I also would like to state that the storm2 is possibly not even a new product on its own; for one, the CPU is the exact same as the storm1. therefore, what makes you think you’re getting a whole new device? It’s possible you’re just getting a refurbished storm1 with storm2 upgrades.
There really isn’t any difference between the storm 1 and the storm 2 other than bug fixes, a better screen, more memory and less moving parts.
But if the CPU is the same, still no open GL implementation (choppy browsing and gaming, GUI is very choppy since it’s all software mode) I’d say go with the 3Gs. 600mhz cpu FTW!!!
The Storm2 has three different keyboards to choose from actually. The default is “automatic” which selects the Pearl-style keyboard in portrait mode and a QWERTY (full) keyboard in landscape mode, however there are other choices for both modes — it just comes down to user preference (these can be changed under Options).
Also, multi-touch capabilities ARE on the Storm2, such as in cut/copy mode, when you can use two different points of contact at once to select the text you want to copy. There are also some games & gadgets that take advantage of the multi-touch feature. I do agree that it’s underutilized and there is a world of possibilities that aren’t yet being addressed in the current version. I do like the pinch/zoom feature of the iPhone.
My biggest complaint about both devices is that they don’t support Flash. Supposedly iPhone would be easiest to get Flash working on but Apple hasn’t expressed an interest in trying — if they are they haven’t said — as usual mum is the word on that. On the other hand, Blackberry devices, because of their particular platform and coding, are much more difficult to implement Flash on but just a few weeks ago RIM joined Adobe’s developer program (finally!) and are rumored to be working to resolve these obstacles.
Both phones are phenomenal powerhouse devices but their inability to stream video content is becoming an embarrassing issue. I really love my Blackberry (on my 4th model now with the Storm2) but I’m extremely frustrated that I can’t access content that even simple non-smartphones can.
PS — I agree with your assessment of the original Storm, when I had a chance to demo it I was unimpressed. The issues were apparent within just a few minutes of using it and I was quite disappointed. I decided to wait a while before upgrading. When RIM released the second generation touch screen I was eager to give it a try. I have to say I’m very happy with the Storm2, all of the issues are fixed. Even if it’s not radically different device when looking at the specs (as the previous commenter said) it is still a HUGE improvement in terms of user experience and this version is definitely worthy of the Blackberry name.
Im coming to the end of my contract with a service provider, and currently have the samsung tocco. So Im wanting to change to either the Blackberry storm 2 or Iphone 3GS.
So Im after some advice on which one to go for. my initial thoughts are for the Storm due to me wanting a blackberry for a while (for its email capabilities as well as other things such as a i can put my existing micro sd card in it). The Iphone cant except memory cards.
Id like to know which is better for watching video content and can the blackberry down load film??
So really what im asking is, which is the better device (overall)?
Cheers
Lee
this is the best unlocked blackberry in my opinion. better touch screen, i love it! way better than my old iphone and the apps are fun. it’s practical and easy to use, looks good, to me that matters. the phone can have everything in the world and if it looks like a brick i won’t want it. very impressed with the new storm 2. got one off of gsmauthority.com and it’s been awesome. two thumbs up
wht i wntd to knw is whether the touch of the blackberry storm is as sensitive as the iphone.. which is better ?
