@Mark,
Microsoft can't say that you install only 1GB. Why would they say so? doesn't make sense at all. Its a hardware limitation in terms of processor and motherboard. Just search on Intel's website for the Atom ZXXX processor that Nokia is using.

I agree, that 2GB is better. But again, 1GB is very much usable if you use a Netbook for what is meant to be used as. Generally Netbooks are targeted for frequent travellers or business users for portability. Most of them can run their required programs with 1GB. There should not be any problem running with 1GB for day to day normal tasks.
IT is not meant to replace desktop or laptops yet.

hard core gaming machine??? the point of 2GB is so that more programs can be loaded and used at the same time. this is not about hardcore gaming but to help increase the responsiveness and usability of the machine. Microsoft can't tell them how to build a machine, they can only advise. Now this is not the first time a netbook has been given this limitation but those netbooks are outdated and we have moved onto being able to upgrade the RAM to the max allowed.

All this has just made the machine useless IMO. I couldn't stand running Windows on my netbook with just 1GB. It was unbearablly slow once you opened a few programs. No one is asking for some super fast gaming machine. 2GB isn't too much to ask for in a word processor/internet browsing computer.

@Phat,

It is little disappointing for me to know that you were not aware of this till now?

This was known since a long time, even before they released the launch dates/prices, etc.

Reason is that this is a 1GB soldered RAM(mentioned in the specs) and i think the Atom ZXXX processor that the Booklet uses and the mother board support only 1GB RAM. Hence, they soldered the RAM, so that no one can install 2GB and break their computer.

However, i have also read online from many users who had used Windows 7 Release Candidate, that their computers with 1GB RAM worked fine with Windows 7. Nokia and Microsoft surely know this and hence they made this decision. Also the booklets and netbook are not meant to be hard-core gaming or development machines, they are meant for portability and ease of use and the Booklet 3G specs should be enough for that, unless you want it to be a hard-core gaming machine.

Well no you can run XP with less than 1GB but with the kind of processors they have in these netbooks, you need more RAM!

I have an Acer netbook with Windows XP on it, I upgraded to 2GB. With 1GB this thing will be sluggish and next to useless! Congrats on screwing up yet another product Nokia! If you ask me, Nokia are up to their old tricks! Next model will be upgradeable.......but it won't come out til everyone buys this hunk of junk!

This is probably due the fact, that the Windows Netbook editions (which are especially cheap) do not allow more than 1GB of RAM.
