I think that is great that Nokia is working on stuff like this! I use both Talks and Mobile Speak by my self. I also hope that Nokia will try to make there navigation app more accesible soon! it is really good to have that walking option with street names etc. Moste of the blind / low vision people uses Nokia phones with screenreaders so developing like this is great to keep users to there products dont forget that!

@Alfred Pun
on the reading screen, you can navigate through the characters by using the volume up and down key. just tested and it is working.

My wife tested the program, she is a blind person, she is user of Nuance Talks,
she have the following comment:
1/Can not return to previous word or character when she need to re-read.
2/If the SMS is too long, it is time consuming.
3/Can it read multi-languages?
4.She prefer the program can read the screen by voice than use Braille except it can display more than five characters at the same time.

Just for your information.

@baG: the reason for the tactile feedback based solution might be, visually impaired and blind people, uses hearing for different purposes, for example for walking and listening their surroundings. in this case, overloading the sense of hearing might not be the optimal solution.

also as noted, its difficult to read/listen sms on the, lets say, bus :)

@Colm: sadly, the application requires, at least for the fist time, some aid from a third person. but much probably nokia would find a solution for that if they continue to develop this application :)

Two very valid points, however and im not being smart here as this is an admirable move by Nokia, but how exactly is the blind person meant to download the app, open the app, know whats what on screen etc etc. Touch phone menus are far more complex to boot that non touch.

Granted the person may have a friend who can do it for them but maybe not, i suppose in the end the guide dogs will be trained to do it.

I actually think this is a good step made by Nokia.
And from the last comment, would it be good to read SMS in privacy ? Using voice to read SMS in public may not be always the best solution.
