My problem has been solved - I had a memory card in with lots of songs. Put the ring tones on the phone, take card out and it all works. Phew!

I have lost the ability to select ring/alert tones. When I go into Settings/Personalisation/Tones, the only options I get for changing a tone are ‘download’ or ‘off’. If I select ‘off’, I don’t even get to go back to default! I have my own tones that I like to use. Completely impossible to select them.
